How to Get Rid of that Pesky Windows Registry Error

RegCure will Scan, Repair and Optimize your PC!When the Windows Operating System encounters issues in loading the OS itself or in the execution of an application, or when it detects a hardware problem, you are likely to get a Windows registry error. These errors come across in the following circumstances:

* If the system crashes;
* If applications have been improperly closed;
* Harmful programs such as viruses have been installed; and
* Windows registry errors.
Error repair can be accomplished by using utilities that come with the Operating System or with third party tools.

When Windows suddenly shuts down due to power failure or a crash, Windows disk checking utilities kick in. The System File Checker tool will start the moment the power is restored or the computer is powered on by the user. The purpose of this tool is to scan the hard disk and detect any errors to the file system and then make an attempt to repair them. It will replace damaged system files with clean versions of the system file from the backup available in another partition or on a CD. However, this utility will close when it has finished its operation and will not report on the corrections. The system will have to be restarted for the changes to take effect.

Another common free registry fix program that kicks in when there is a system crash or power failure is "Chkdsk." The purpose of this utility is to check the hard disk for bad sectors or clusters that are lost, cross linked files that are missing and whether there are directory errors. You can use Chkdsk if you are logged in as the administrator, or as a member of the administrative group, at any time while operating the computer. This utility can be accessed from the command prompt. You can also access Chkdsk through the Windows GUI; and this is the easiest way to remember:

In "My Computer" right click the C:\ Local Drive icon (or the drive you wish to check) Click "Properties."

In the "Properties window click the "Tools" tab, and in the panel that says "Error-Checking," click the button that says "Check Now".

In the "Options" section, check the box that says, "Automatically Fix File System Errors." If you wish to perform a surface scan then check the other box as well. If you check neither, the tool will run, but will fix nothing; a report of errors will be available in the Event Viewer. The system will have to be restarted for the corrections to be effective.

The Scan Disk utility too, can be used to check for defects in the hard disk platters. It also checks the file systems. It can correct the lost and bad clusters that were created when a program was suddenly aborted. However, Scan Disk only works on FAT 32, where it does more thorough checking, including the count of free space (and it takes time to assess what that should be). This is one of the most common faults that will develop on a FAT 32 partition if there is a bad shut down. Windows XP does not have Scan Disk only Chkdsk.

Both Scandisk and Chkdsk optimize the file system and improve the performance of the computer.

The System Restore tool is invoked when the System File checker tool is unsuccessful. This tool will help you restore the computer to an earlier point in time when the computer was functioning properly. When this tool is used, programs and updates that were installed in the intervening period will be removed.

Windows can be booted in Safe Mode when Windows throws up a Windows Protection Error due to the installation of faulty hardware or software. The Windows Safe mode can be invoked by holding down the Control key during the booting process.

Windows Errors could be triggered by problems in the Windows registry. The registry is a database at the core of the Windows Operating System. It maintains a list of references to essential files relating to hardware and software installed on a Windows PC. Every time an application is installed or uninstalled, the architecture of Windows demands that entries are made in this central repository, so that Windows can know which programs will have to be loaded at start up and which programs can await the user input during run time.

A badly written installer can overwrite "dll" files that are shared across programs and corrupt them. Uninstallers that are imperfectly written can leave behind a large number of orphaned entries that belong to no program and can also remove shared dll files resulting in hiccups in running Windows and other applications and programs on the system. This can result in Windows registry bloating, missing dll and .exe errors, slowing down of the system or the blue screen of death. Spyware and malware too, can sneakily leave entries in Windows registry, prompting the Windows to load up the spyware or malware on start up. Finally, users may inadvertently delete valid and necessary shared dll files while uninstalling applications and programs from the Windows Operating System.

Windows errors of this kind can be fixed by backing up a copy of the registry to another directory on another partition or separate hard disk and then running a Windows registry cleaner to identify and clean out the Windows registry of all the flotsam that is resulting in errors.

Windows Registry Checker is a utility that can help users identify if the problems and errors being presented by Windows relate to the Windows registry. When you start your computer, the Windows Registry Checker tool (Scanreg.exe) creates a backup of system files and registry configuration information (including user account information, protocol bindings, software program settings, and user preferences) once daily. Files that Windows Registry Checker backs up include System.dat, User.dat, System.ini, and Win.ini. This utility will try to restore a damaged registry from a backup. If no backup is available, it will try to repair the registry and optimize it. This tool can be enabled or disabled from the scanreg.ini file

Newbie and non expert users can use third party Windows registry cleaners such as Error Nuker or RegClean to do this job effectively, quickly and automatically with little or no intervention from the user. Expert users can access the Windows registry directly and remove all the redundant entries manually or use the Windows Registry Checker tool.

A Windows registry error can also be triggered off by viruses and other harmful programs installed onto the PC. Anti-virus and Anti-spyware/Malware cleaning programs such as Norton Anti Virus, Trend Micro or Windows Defender are useful programs to install on your computer. These programs scan the files and folders on the system and identify viruses, Trojans, malware and spyware that have stealthily entered the system. They will then fix the problem by cleaning out the malicious program.
